Below are the market prices for various Fish at Newlyn Market and Billingsgate Market in London. These are the prices for fish landed directly to that market. In Dartmouth the Crab Fishermen get between 90p and £1.20 per kg when their catch is picked up by the wholesalers lorry, landed directly from the Boat to the Quay. Compare that with what the wholesale market price is in London. These guys are being ripped off, but dont forget they measure their catch in TONS! not Kilos.

What this is all saying is the Fishermen don't have to catch an awfull lot of fish to make a decent living. One Turbot weighing about 10lbs will sell for around £100 in Newlyn fish market, a Monkfish weighing 10lbs will fetch £50.00, a 10lb Skate about £35.00, a 5lb Brill about £16.00, a 2lb Dover or Lemon Sole will be worth £6.00 at the fish market. It's no wonder Turbot or Brill are very rarley caught by Anglers these days. As the fish get scarcer, so the price goes up, so the fishermen don't have to catch as many to make the same money. Blue Fin Tuna (Tunny fish we used to call them when they used to catch them in the English Channel and North Sea up untill the 1960's) landed fresh to a Japanese market, can fetch up to $200,000 each. These fishermen employ expensive helicopters to spot the individual fish out at sea, so the Boat can be guided in to harpoon the fish, the fish is then chilled and flown to Japan by aeroplane. How much will they pay for the very last Blue Fin that swims? Enough I suspect, to tempt someone to go and search for it!
